Well personally I don't think it's a good idea to put a CPU in there that's not designed for it. In a laptop there is really not much room to dissipate the heat. And with a 766 MHz Celeron vs. 500 MHz Celeron- you're not going to see as much as a speed increase as what you probably expect. So it's probably not worth the risk of damaging your laptop. You're probably better off selling it and then getting a new 1 GHz+ laptop which can be as low as $800.

CoolComputing Forum » Hardware Questionsi have a Celeron 500MHz laptop. in my investigation, it is a desktop CPU in Socket370 not a mobile one.
In this regard, can i just plug in a 766MHz Celeron even if the voltage requirements are different? (500MHz=2.0v, 766MHz=1.65v)
if it is possible, will i encounter some problems in the future like stability, burnout (since the laptop is designed for a 500MHz CPU), etc.
i am thinking of Celeron 766MHz so i will not have to set the FSB to 100MHz or 133MHz anymore.
i cannot find some jumpers to set since it is a laptop.
btw, my chipset is SIS630.
