Can I upgrade a laptop?

Well it'll be very difficult to upgrade the CPU. You'll have to remove the old CPU and then put in the faster one without damaging anything. My guess is that if you're able to put in the faster chip the system will automatically detect it w/o jumper changes, but still I don't recommend it. There are other ways of speeding up the laptop- add more RAM, update drivers, etc.

Can I upgrade the cpu on a Compaq Presario 1640 with a amd 266 mhz. I have several amd cpu's with the same core and I/O voltage. I am not aware of any information that compaq would be willing to give. I have not worked on a laptop upgrade yet and also wonder if there are any jumpers that are available to be reset to work with the new cpu's. I do not think that just installing a higher cpu will work or not. My cpu's range up to 500 mhz. Shocked
