Notes and Recommendations: Intel recently released faster versions of the Pentium III (1.13 GHz, 1.2 GHz, and 1.26 GHz). These are designed more with server applications in mind for those who want to do a dual PIII. They certainly are not cheap- at an average selling price of $215 for the PIII 1.2 GHz the similarly priced Athlon 1900+ is a much better performer. The Athon XP no longer has the performance edge, however, as the new 512K-cache versions of the Pentium 4 2 GHz and 2.2 GHz are faster in most applications than the Athlon XP 2000+, though not by much.

Best high-end, best-bang-for-the-buck CPU for this time: AMD Athlon XP 1800+
