Win2000/Win98SE Network Problem

Make sure that you're using the same workgroup name (e.g. "Workgroup") for all the computers. Assuming that you don't have any Windows NT/2000 servers running all your computers must be set to use workgroup instead of domain. If you still have problems try doing the following for the W98 PCs that are slow in seeing the W2K machine:

1)in a DOS window, type "edit c:�you_windows_directory(usually "windows")�hosts

2)type "name of your W2K computer", tab, and then its IP address. E.g.

mywin2K 192.168.100.5

3)save the file and exit

Now see if the problem is fixed- no reboot necessary.

I have one box running Windows 2000 and four running Windows 98SE. The Win2k box is being used as a workstation, but is also sharing a folder for an accounting package to the Win98 boxes. The problem is that some of the Win98 boxes don't seem to be able to reliably see, or mount, the shared Win2k box as a networked drive. Two of the Win98 boxes have no trouble at all, but the other two are either really slow finding all the computers on the network or can't do it at all. I've changed cables, ethernet cards, reinstalled Windows98, reinstalled clients, protocols, drivers, etc., just about everything I can think of, but the problem persists. BTW, all of the Win98 boxes are new, virually identical machines hardwarewise. I am at a total loss for a solution. Any help will be much appreciated.
