Dishonest policy

I purchased the Spanish Level 1 in 2008. After two computer change, the last resulting in a new hard drive for my lab, i attempted to activate the software on a new computer. I was told that because I purchased the item from another party and not Rosetta Stone, there would be no way to prove that I purchased this product without a receipt from 2008. This is the most dishonest act as there product is already VERY expensive. This company needs to held accountable. Very cruel and dishonest especially after you have already over charged us already. Shame on you Rosetta Stone

Worst policy

Same that Kathy... I did uninstall Rosseta from an old computer. Then reinstalling it in a new computer they request me the receipt, so they can "sell" me another license!!!!!

I don't have the receipt, I bought it months ago.

I registered with the same email they are writing to me, I have the original code, the original package... I am not a Pirate!!

Rosseta Sucks. I will never buy from Rosseta again.

My computer crashed so i had to reinstall. Now it is not loading. They told me I only am allowed two installs. The only way they will even considering helping me reinstall is if I email them the receipt which I don't have since it was a gift. It has been registered to my name and the same email address since purchasing it. They are sending me emails regarding this problem so know it's the same email but that doesn't seem to be enough to prove to them I am the original owner. So that was a big waste of $500. I will NEVER purchase another one of their products.

I received my Rosetta stone version to learn Dutch in January 2011. The software wouldn't load and kept saying that it had to close down.Completely defective discs! After numerous complaints to Rosetta stone that fell on deaf ears I have quit trying to get my money back or have the course replaced. I have never even received an acknowledgment from them. I have been totally ignored!!! They are a total rip off. $149.00 down the drain. Do not buy from them!

I am sooo disappointed with the customer service in what is supposed to be one of the most respected names in the industry. All they want is your money, they wont even honor their own product unless you purchase it directly from them--even for exchanges. If you purchased from a retail store, you are screwed. When installing the software, you have to put in this credit card looking thing that says you have 3 months until it expires! What kind of bs is that? As expensive as the product is, there shouldn't be an expiration. THey don't tell you that at all when purchasing it. I can't even return it because the box is now opened. They should be STOPPED!

Terrible customer service Dept. They should be ashamed. After a new system install, we realized that we needed to deactivate the software or you lose you key. When we called in, they needed a RECEIPT ... from 4 years ago? Their CS treated us as if we were trying to pirate the software. David S. was just awful - he argued with us regarding the lack of logic behind their policies . . . really rude. Great product but beware if you need any help from the company.

I really like the software, but I do not like Rosetta Stone's licensing policy. In fact, I think it might be an FTC violation. The problem is that they prevent you from selling/transferring your license. I owned a copy of Rosetta Stone for several years and asked them about upgrading to the latest version. They did not have an upgrade... told me I would have to purchase a new copy. So, I did... thinking that I would be able to put my old version on eBay... recoup at least a small portion of my initial purchase cost. It turns out that eBay removed my listing, because Rosetta Stone told them to remove it (because the license does not allow me to sell my copy). This is restraint of trade. I would never do business with these people again, and I do not recommend them, just for this very reason.

Scam - do not buy anything from Rosetta Stone

I bought French levels 1-3 directly from the Rosetta Stone website about 4-5 years ago and my boyfriend also installed it on his laptop. Since then, I have had to replace my laptop and when the activation code failed to work, I was told that I had purchased a fake and unless I could present a bank statement, there was nothing that could be done about it.

When I called my bank, it turns out that, because I replaced my card due to theft back in 2011, the records for that account predating 2009 no longer exist.

I was told that I was fighting a losing battle and directed to their sales team so that I could purchase an authentic product.

I believe that Rosetta Stone make their older codes redundant and conveniently put it down to fraud knowing that the odds of customers being able to produce the information asked for to be slim.

My advice; Do not purchase anything from Rosetta Stone unless you can afford to pay another $500 "rent" when you replace your computer, or you have a magic computer that can live forever without ever needing to replace the hard drive.

    Buyer Beware

    I love the French language program but here are some of the issues I've had:

    2012

    Today program wouldn't launch. I chat with support online who asks all the technical questions then tries to sell me the latest version, at a discount of course. I explain I paid a consider sum (nearly $1,000) for my CDs and I want my program to work now. In the end the only advice I got was to again restart my computer. Amazingly, after the chat session I restart my computer (2nd restart) and the program launches. Seems like heavy handed tactics to force customers to spend more money. If my program stops working again I will be submitting a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission.

    2011

    Computer crashed in 2011 and I spent considerable time and energy on the phone with Rosetta customer support to get my programs activated on my new computer.

    2010

    Purchased CDs directly from RS, French levels 1,2, 3, 4, 5.

  • Good for refresher; pronunciation; vocabulary.

    received the software for a christmas,sort of funny to get a hebrew course for a christmas gift,huh?

    anyway. i need to speak ,not write the language and the software keeps asking me to pick phrases that are written...i dont give a flying rats ass about reading. i need to speak...i am screwed and they have the money and you can not talk to a human

    I purchased the newest Rosetta Total-e program following a promotional rebate offered on line. So far I find the software quirky and not particularly user friendly. Customer support via chat (apparently from South Asia) is iffy. Email support takes 24 hrs and is somewhat clearer but no more helpful. The main drawback of the software is that it can be installed in only ONE computer. So those of us who travel away from home with a notebook are out of luck. The company does not publicize this feature ahead of time, as do many anti-virus programs. Caveat Emptor.

    As difficult as it was to activate the program purched for $630 it became impossible to contniue using it after installation on a new hard drive. They simply blocked the program. You need to call them to ask for new access. They keep track of all your upgrades and computer installations.

    My programms were legally purchased and still I felt being treated like a suspect. I requested my money back. See what happens.

    Worse customer care EVER !!!

    I bought Rosetta Stone for my iPad in September of 2012. Initially it worked ok. After a month, it would frequently crash. Customer support had no clue. For the last few MONTHS, it would even allow me log in. They keep telling me that they cannot even find my account !!! They keep transferring me to the 'specialist' but the line goes dead!

  • it was easy to use
  • Cons:
  • Worked well for less than 1 month
  • customer care is completely useless unable to solve any problems
  • it is usually not even reachable!

    CRAPPY TECHNICAL SUPPORT

    I've tried to install a required update on my Mac OS 10.5.8

    However Adobe Air does not support anything before Leopard so I can't run install.

    Technical support team is USELESS

    It might be a good idea to actually test out a product to make sure it works before releasing it.

    Now I have $600 of worthless software

    THANKS ROSETTA STONE

    am SO unhappy with Rosetta Stone. I purchased a RS language program from a vendor who was using a fake licensing certificate and stolen credit cards to buy thousands of RS products and resell them. The guy is now in jail and ordered to pay restitution to Rosetta Stone. I only found this out when I contacted them to get a deactivation code to transfer the program to our new computer. They are refusing to allow me to reactivate our program..the one we paid hundreds of dollars for, which they happily activated almost 2 years ago, and which my daughter has been using for her high school foreign language credits. They will not allow me to pay some sort of fee to "legitimize" my purchase and get an activation code. My only recourse is to purchase a new program for over $500. Nice.

    my rosetta stone espanol program does not load on my computer as the instructions show. i can only access sound. rosetta stone did not provide me with adequate technical support and made it difficult to e-mail them with my problem. the product is over priced. from a language stand point the verval language is spoken two fast at times to catch the whole phrase. i would not recomend the product to any one.

    Rosetta Stone was a huge disappointment. I have learned 2 languages to practical fluency because my teachers taught us relevant things... like "how are you?" and "my name is ___ "

    Ms. Stone, on the other hand, teaches "they eat eggs" first and foremost. (Funny, I must have seen that phrase 50 times this morning and I still don't know it!) DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! Especially for Hebrew. I can't believe I flushed 250 bucks down the drain.

    This program is the biggest waste of time & money I ever hope to see. I purchased it for review since I have studied Spanish before.

    How can one possibly mispronounce "no" & "po" since they are the same in English & Spanish??? This ridiculous software leaves me in the lurch repeatedly for such simple stuff, while it accepts my lousy "rolled" double r. Huh??

    It jumps over umfamiliar words before I have time to think about them & makes me repeat over & over the simple stuff.

    For about 40 or 50 hours I've been trying with the rosetta stone thing, and its just... flecking awful.

    It moves at a snails pace and endlessly covers simple words like "hello" and "goodbye," and UTTERLY useless words like "elephant." All this while teaching you VERY few actual words. It's like "ok I'm in unit 4, now I know how to say 'hello', for the love of JESUS teach me something new." Basically I feel like throttling the people that made this tripe. I want my money back!

    Just google "rosetta stone sucks" and you'll get thousands of reasons why it sucks. But the obvious reason that no one lists is that it never lets you apply what it has "taught" you. Its just an endless series of pictures with little phrases accompanying them. It never asks you things that actually force you to use the language, like pimseleur will for example. So you just basically learn how to become good at picking the right picture, not necessarily the right word. I can't explain why it sucks so bad without writing about 10 pages... which I'm actually thinking I might do. I hate this THAT much.

    OH... NUMBER ONE worst thing about Rosetta Stone is the "milestone" section. Words just can't describe...

    Ironic that you claim it doesn't allow you to apply the phrases it teaches you, and that you hate the milestones. Because that's exactly what the milestone does. Some software is just over peoples head.

    As exciting as the advertisement is, I agree with the other complaints on this site and sum it up as being so user unfriendly. The company wants your money and you get what you get, period. Yes, you will be treated as a software pirate, a technical imbicle and a person of low intelligence by the company's support staff. Why doesn't this site move the "don't click on the star rating before you submit the review" to the right of the actual stars?

    As with just about everyone else here I have found Rosetta Stone's Customer Service and licensing practices to be horrible. We have spent a fortune on these programs (and have enjoyed the software), but we lost the hard drive on our computer and are just out of luck as far as the company is concerned about installing it on our replacement computer.

    very dissatisfied with Rosetta Stone - receive a defective disck and spent close to 8 hours trying to get resolution only to be sent a replacement disk that was not the right version. When I returned the defective product they would not pay for shipping. When I asked to speak to the CSRs manager he said he didn't have one so I asked to speak to his boss and was told I couldn't. When I asked for his bosses name he just said Ed and would not give me a full name or phone number - ridiculous.

    This is an over-rated and over-hyped program. It is not at all clear what many of the photographs refer to. In addition, their is no way to check your guesses with English prompts. Worst of all, the glib advertising, found everywhere, gives the impression that learning a language is as easy as falling off a log. Not so.

    Although the program has helped me to learn French, it will not work on my upgraded computer and the company refuses to upgrade the software. Since the company claims that you can learn a language at your own pace, and since people upgrade computers on a regular basis, it is ridiculous to expect customers to continuously purchase new, very expensive software. I was planning on purchasing Level 3, but as I cannot even use the Level 2 software that I have already purchased, this company has lost not only myself as a customer, but my husband and a couple of friends who were each interested in making a purchase.

    And god help you if youre like me and have a harddrive failure, you can never go get the de-activation code off the drive, and they WILL NOT de-activate it for you unless you have a proof of purchase from the store and credit card info, so if you were planning to give it as a gift, better give them all the receipts as well.

    I DO NOT recommend a purchase from them again.

    I had trouble installing version 2 of Italian and thought I might be able to upgrade to version 3 to use the newer features. I was told that since I had the 2nd version for over a year I no longer qualified for it and was informed my only option would be to pay the full purchase price for version 3. I would have thought that a company this "reputable" would offer an upgrade path to their software. I would never do business with this company again.

    My Thai program has the curriculum study guide writen in Thai. It's of no value to me as I begin to learn the language. Customer service simply says that's the way it is. I would not have bought the program had I known this in advance. The program, although useful in some ways does not nearly live up to the company's claims.

    I am disappointed. It's not very good. The software is buggy (hangs a lot on OS X). The learning is tedious and slow. They need to do a better job studying how people learn, and give them words and sentences that are more useful. For example, after many hours I know how to say "egg" in French really well. I can also talk about apples and bikes. But, I can't yet say "My name is Bob" nor can I ask you your name or where you live.

    After being charged 551.70 for a Rosetta Stone product I never ordered or wanted,said product being sent to another state I have had a terrible time getting my money back.Customer service has been unhelpful,and rude to myself and my bank.I have been given the run around and been hung up on.

    Doesn't measure up to irs claims. Extremely limited in the depth and scope of the lessons. Terrible customer service, I was hung up on, insulted, and put on hold for hours many times. The packaging was so bad, that I had to wipe glue off every disc! On top of it all, I completed the entire 3 level program in just 2 weeks. I did not learn enough german to feel as if I am anywhere close to being able to speak well with a native. Claiming that the CIA uses this is a huge stretch. Nobody could become a good speaker using only rosetta stone. And worst of all, once you open the packaging, you are not allowed to sell, or give it away. You are literally stuck with it. DONT BUY IT! DONT MAKE MY SAME MISTAKE!

    I received the Spanish (Latin America) levels 1 & 2 directly from Rosetta Stone. 3 of the disks had glue on them. After about 2 hours with customer support level 1, they told me support level 2 had to authorize a replacement disk or a return authorization. After writing 2 emails, level 2 support wrote me saying they would replace the messed up disks.I left a message with Tyler, he never called back. Now I will try to return the whole program. Their customer support is terrible! Don't be suckered in like I was. Don't buy this program!

    The program is all right, you get returns in relation to the effort you put in. However, the customer service sucks. I did not use it for a while and got a "database out of date" notice. Nothing else, just that on a product only 8 months old. No response from the company. Had to search for a fix on line to get the program working. If you buy it, be prepared for a product with minimal customer support and based on the stuff I found on the web, very sloppy program issues.

    I heard good recommendations regarding Rosetta Stone so I used it on my laptop to help me learn German since I was going to be involved in helping the German Olympics team. So far so good. I don't know too many words yet but I am able to do basic communications with my teammates. I definitely would give it a good rating.

    Rosetta Stone Mandarin Chinese has helped me in getting the basics of the language. I've learned basic vocabulary and grammar in a month. I liked how it uses voice recognition to check how well you've pronounced words in a graphical manner. I certainly would not hesitate recommending RosettaStone Chinese others looking to learn basic Mandarin for business use in Taiwan and China.

    Not good for adults

    That total immersion concept may work well on small kids... but for an adult is way too much time spent for too little results... I purchased Level 5 German, I spent many hours learning just a few words and rules. I am returning it today. Hope the do return my money.

    Call for the demo and your told about level one but not told the total cost of the program which is billed monthly.

    Using this product has become very frustrating. The pictures are nice and the ability to compare your pronounciation is a good calibration tool but after the first lesson it becomes vague as to what the picture is describing. A person, a person running with friends, co-workers, ??? THere is no english conversion to ensure you are learning the correct word. Looking at other products on the market for less $$.

    Completely OVERRATED product. Way too expensive for what you get. Does NOT "teach" the language....There is NO english tutorial or translations. In fact there's no english anywhere. No glossary or even a dictionary which is unacceptable at this price. Not even basic rules of grammar are taught. At first one may find it entertaining to play a word-to-picture association game by GUESSING which photo correlates to a word or phrase, but this quickly becomes a pile of worthless fluff since you never gain the skill to form practical sentences or more importantly how to ask questions in that language. The course is very lacking and cannot be a stand alone teaching system. I feel a great improvement would be to have a button on each lesson page that says "Translate"... you would click on it and see the english words underneath it. The learning process would be much faster and more complete. Another point...This is not "software" in the true sense... it requires the use of a run-disc to operate at all times which frequently re-spins in your drive, draining laptop batteries & taxing the OS. If this product was say $40 to $80 it would be OK. But in view of the claims they make, the lack of educational substance, and their licensing policy, it's a huge DISAPPOINTMENT for the money.

    This method does not work on everyone, as each person has a different learning style. Rosetta Stone claims to 'guarantee' customer satisfaction, yet when I attempted to get a refund, I was refused. However, dealing with Rosetta Stone was a good lesson for my 13 year old, who now understands just how easy it is for companies misrepresent their claims to the public, then slime out of giving back refunds while hiding behind fine print. Buyer Beware!

    I have used the Japanese and Arabic.. and used it on native speakers at my job... at an international airport in the USA... its awesome... Top levels in both are basically Junior high level... but if you are an American and can talk Arabic or Japanese as good as a 14 year old native.. you are fluent and you can travel or do whatever by yourself.. RS is awesome

    I am taking a Russian on-line version, and once it works it seems ok. Customer Service is eager but really does not seem to have technical background. The online version of Russian will not work with 10.6.2 . Tech rep says it is the antivirus software, even though it will not work on a 10.6.2 Mac without Anti Virus. They seem to try to blame any problem on the user instead of looking for a patch.

    I am able to run the software on a Mac with 10.5 installed (and the anti virus!)

    For Dutch, levels 1&2 (version 2) weren't bad for gaining a basic grounding in the language. Not great, but better than nothing, considering how hard it is to find Dutch-language resources. Level 2 actually became quite challenging towards the end. However, level 3 (version 3) is just plain awful and a complete waste of money. For some reason, the company decided to completely dumb the program down. After finishing level 2 with some very conversationally driven sentences, level 4 is back to useless sentences like "She stands under the shower". This would be like going from begining algebra back to simple addition.

    Rosetta Stone is the most aggravating language learning system I have ever tried. Everything is based on some chinese person saying a word or words while you see a photo or group of photos. You never hear the english equivalent to let you know which photo is to be compared with the word or words that the Chinese person speaks. The companion CD's are much worse, as you just listen to someone speaking Chinese with no idea of what they are saying. This has to be the worse language leaning system on the market

    Rosetta Stone is awful. I spent hours learning basic Hebrew and when I tested it on a native i realized that I had completely misconstrued the grammar based on the "one picture, one phrase" approach. Don't waste your money!

    Rosetta stone sucks compared to Tell Me More. I had the chance to try both programs and it's not close. Save your money and purchase TMM instead. It's cheaper and has more lessons and features.
