I am really surprised by Lord Rochester's review of Friendly Planet. We have not had a passenger by that name, but if he wishes to identify himself to me, I will be glad to personally look into his claim. We have an extremely low rate of complaints, and while it is impossible to please everyone 100% of the time, we definitely try to do so. Friendly Planet Travel takes care of every situation that is our responsibility 100% of the time. In situations where the responsibility isn't even ours, we try to intervene to help passengers. For the record, we would never simply ignore a complaint. Neither would we ignore any responsibility for error on our parts.

Did the Treasures of Thailand tour and it was the best thing. Did the trip on my own, very first time, and just loved it. Looking at booking another tour now.

Friendly Travel screwed up my airplane reservations to my connecting transatlantic flight causing me to purchase a $450 new ticker. They would not reimburse me for their error and not even provide me a trip credit for the equal amount of my added expense. For all the grief they caused me I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN and I sugguest reader take great care in dealing with them.

I did the Greek Isles Tour. My first excursion with FPT. It was the best. Our tour guides' native language - English and then they were fluent in Greek. They were extremely knowledgeable, professional and cool all at once. The hotel and ship accommadations were exquisite for a group tour type deal. It made for a wonderful trip. Oh, the price/value - right up my alley. I'm planning my next trip with them now.

Friendly Planet can do better

Just recently returned from a Friendly Planet excursion to The Galapagos Islands and Ecuador Amazon. The flights and hotels were fine. The guides apparently did not work directly for Friendly Planet, but were subcontractors from other tour agencies. We were given breakfast at each hotel and then ate lunches and dinners at other restaurants in the towns we stayed. Our guide in Santa Cruz said that a Friendly Planet rep had just been there a few weeks prior to our visit to choose restaurants and menu choices. We were offered only tuna fish or chicken for both lunch and dinner the first 2 days. Both cooked very poorly, severely over cooked and quite bland, and were told that this is the menu that we would have for the rest of our stay We complained to our guide who apparently contacted Friendly Planet and was able to arrange more choices of food, even if we had to pay extra the last night for a better meal. We were disappointed by the whole Galapagos tour in general only because there was no "wow" factor. Yes, we saw a lot of sea lions and marine iguanas, but very few blue footed boobies and 1 lonesome penguin. Only saw 1 land tortoise in the wild, the rest were on a farm or in breeding programs at the Darwin Center. Not Friendly Planets fault, other then that maybe they could choose different islands to travel to? The snorkeling was not good at all. Very cloudy water and difficult to see anything. Our local snorkeling guide took us into an area with a strong current after he had been told not to. Very tiring swim back to the dock against the current. The Solymar Hotel in Santa Cruz was lovely, right on the water with their resident Sea Lion Wendy who lounges by the pool all day, then takes a dip in the pool before returning to the sea at night. The Iguana Crossing Hotel on Isabella was nice if you had a water view room, which all in our group did not. The drinks at their small bar were extremely expensive, so bring your own or take a short walk into town where there seemed to be a lot of happy hour specials. When we returned to the hotel after dinner, all the outside lights were turned off and made for a very dark walk up the stairs into the lobby. They should leave the lights on when it is dark.

We left the islands looking forward to going to the Ecuador Amazon and seeing an abundance of rain forest flowers, fauna and creatures. After a 2 1/2 hour, not for anyone not in decent physical condition, trek through the forest, we came out not seeing 1 single bird (heard a couple), no snakes or butterflies. Our guide Fausto found one tiny poisonous frog, large poisonous ants and a couple monkeys. Expected so much more wild life, so we were all disappointed. We did enjoy the ride on the river back to our hotel via bamboo like rafts made by the locals and paddled by our guide. We stayed at Casa del Suizo set high on a hill overlooking the Napo River. Quite a trek up the the hotel and down whenever we did an excursion...again, not easy if you are not in decent physical condition. The rooms were fine. They were clean and did not have AC because the windows are only screened. It was fine though with a high speed fan over the beds. The food there was served buffet style for all meals and had a decent selection of foods to please everyone. Nice pool and bar area. Friendly Planet however did not include drinking water in our package so we had to purchase water. We asked for a pitcher of water on our table for meals like we saw on other tables and were told that it was not included. What reputable tour company would send tourists to a destination where there is not potable water and make them pay for it extra. When we bought this to the attention of our guide and driver, they realized that they were also being charged for their water and contacted home base to have the water charges removed from our bills. That is the main reason I gave Friendly Planet only a rating of three...the water situation and the food in Galapagos. There were also a few issues on our itinerary that were not as described. Over all, made some new friends for which we are blessed, but will not travel with Friendly Planet again. We have traveled to different parts of the world with much better tour operations. FP, you can do better.
