entertainment book scam

I went for the $5 offer for the book which expires in Aug/Nov. The small print signed me up for automatic pay for future books. I tried to cancel. Spent 20 minutes listening to a "your call is very important to us" message and gave up. called again, pushed the "I'm a business and want to sign up" option, and was put through immediately. The rep said she couldn't handle cancellations, only sign-ups. She said her supervisor is not (ever) available, when asked. She transferred me back to the "your call is very important to us" line. After another 15 minutes I gave up, which I assume is their "business plan". I will stop payment through my visa card. Never again!

Pros:
  • Used to love it. Got some great deals on hotels. Less useful now
  • with all the Groupon and similar offers for free.
  • Cons:
  • Once you sign up they are set up so that it takes a great deal of time and effort to escape. I think the company is on its last legs...

Same here. I am battling through my financial institution and then BBB and the attorney general from my state.
Waited 30 minutes finally got a rep , who was chewing her gum and popping it in my ear. Sounds like uneducated individual. Said she would remove from renewal but said no way on refunding money for books I do not want.
Happened to me too. Total SCAM!!! BEWARE of this company!

I returned the book and was expecting the $30.00 credit. I even called and they confirmed the book was returned. I was told the credit would be on my credit card and I waited two billing cycles as I was told by customer service. I just called and spoke to supervisor Dustin #142 and was told that they would not issue credit as the book was not returned in 30 days. This is fraud everyone including the person who emailed me the lable and the person who I called to check on the credit told me the credit would be applied to my credit card.

Coupons honored more often in rural/suburban areas, but...

We chose to patronize Ro's Pizza & Fried Chicken, in Schenectady, NY 12304, because we had an "Entertainment Coupon" for $5 off. They even advertise the "Entertainment Book" in a sign posted near the front door. Be warned that the owner, Jamel, decides on a case-by-case basis just how much this $5 coupon is worth. For us, though we met the coupon requirements, it was only worth $2, then after an argument, it was worth $2.50.

He actually told us he would not honor the full five dollar amount unless we bought "fifty dollars worth of food." At a fast food location! We will NOT be going there again!

This is a complete scam. First, they need your credit card #. For $4.95 you will supposedly get a discount coupon for your favorite restaurant, but when you get to the next screen, you find out you now have to pay $19.95 for one of their Entertainment Books. If you try to cancel, 1) you can't get through on the phone; 2) if you do, they promise to cancel the charge but "forget" and it will be months before you can get the charges stopped. It is a pure scam. Avoid Entertainment Book.

In 2008 I purchased an Entertainment Book with various coupons and discounts. Upon purchasing, I was given the chose for 'automatic renewal' of the 2010 book. It was stated I could cance at anytime, and would be notified prior to the automatic renewal. I never received notification, but was instead charged for the 2010 book. When I called customer service they told they sent an email, I told them I 'm being charged for something I never received.

Not to mention, several of the merchants in the 2009 either no longer accept the coupons or are no longer in business. So they're selling something that is basically unusable.

This is very deceptive. I also inquired why I didn't atleast receive an email notification for the renewal, to which they replied, 'We've found most people don't check their email'. My feelings is the don't want to give any notification because they know you'll cancel.

I use to be a regular customer of this company, but after dealing with their lack of customer service, NO MORE. They've lost a longtime customer

    This company is a ripoff

Yup. I suggest reporting to ripoff.com then your local consumer affairs division as well as BBB and your state attorney general.
It is fraud and a scam. They sound like low rent individuals who bought the old company out of bankruptcy. Not to be racist but they seem to all be black folks. Maybe working out of a low rent warehouse in the projects

This book or merchant I cannot figure out which ones yet makes me mad. If you notice on the some of the coupons it states on some "see reverse side for locations" for the companies that have this printed on their coupon are not accepting the coupons if their location is not listed. Nowhere does it state "Valid at this location only" These companies are refusing to take the coupons and saying that that statement means "its not valid at their location" I work in retail and this is unacceptable especially if the companies take competitor coupons. Hungry Howies is a prime example. The manager refuses to take the coupons where their location is not listed but nowhere does it state their not valid. This is a headache and Entertainment Book needs to be more specific with those type of coupons Boston Market's coupons say "At participating locations only" which is understandable but for the other companies, theres no excuse on why they cannot take them.

This is true. I ordered a $5 book not knowing it would sign me up for more books at $50 each. I tried to cancel only minutes after ordering and they said they never cancel the $5 specials.
Wished I'd seen your post before I ordered a $5.00 book in June 2013! It happened to me....TOTAL SCAM!!!!

$5 book deal is a scam

I ordered the $5 special book deal and called less than 5 minutes later to cancel it. They said they never cancel the $5 deals and I'm signed up for auto-renew in two months at an outrageous price. If you like this book, never buy it where they have your credit card and address. You are in it for a long long time.

I love the entertainment book. I buy 4 books each year. I think for the most part the coupons are awesome and just by the grocery coupons you can get your money back. I use the rental coupons. I just love the entertainment books.

Do not purchase an entertainment book. I am a general manager of a restaurant in kansas city. The entertainment book company put my restaurant in their book offering free food that we did not authorize. I called the comapny and asked them to fax me a copy of my contract. They put us in a 2-year contract giving away free food so they can make money. The electronic "signature" they have is by one of my owners and the name is spelled wrong. The company told me there is nothing they could do except give me the name of my account representative. I've been trying for 2 days to get ahold of this lady and she wont return my calls. We honor the coupons because it makes us look bad if we don't, but we will be fighting the company until the issue is resolved. Bottom line: merchants and consumers, do not do business with the entertainment books.

That explains all the bogus coupons I tried to use. Some companies are out of business for 3 or more years but still appear in book.

    Do Not Buy!!!

I bought this book for Tulsa,OK. I based my decision on three coupons for a local water park that were "buy 1 admission, get 1 free", which I felt were the greatest value the book had to offer...I went to use them and the park informed me they were invalid and they had cancelled their contract with Entertainment 3 YEARS PRIOR!!! Most of the other coupons can be found in the phonebook or newspaper for free. Even after reporting this, Entertainment has refused to give me my money back because they have an all inclusive "not accountable" policy for any vendor that does not honor their coupons.

I have been using Entertainment Books for many yrs. and have benefited from them. Until today at Cacia's Bakery. Their coupon was 50% off bakery items up to $5.00. My total came to $10.36. I gave them my E coupon and they said they are only giving $1.00 off w/the coupon. That's not fair play. I feel that it is fraud on the bakery's part. They had no exlaination to why they are not honoring the 50% off. Needless to say, I won't be going there any longer!

    order # 5450

    Very deceptive company!

On Dec. 17th, I purchased 2, 2010 Entertainment books for Christmas Gifts. They did not arrive in time for Christmas. My friends, did not get their gifts. How embarrassing it was not to have gifts for my friends. After my complaints, I received somewhat form letters from Entertainment.

I was to see my friends again on New Years Eve (14 days after I ordered the books).

The books still did not arrive, even though they said they were shipped on 12/21. I had to run out to get another gift for my friends to save embarrassment AGAIN! How long does it take to get from Detroit MI to a Chicago suburb, Illinois? I have family in Michigan, it takes two days the most for mail to get here. It is only a 4 hour drive.

Today, is January 2, the books are still not here. I emailed Entertainment again, asking for them to refund my money immediately, I no longer have use for the books, and I will refuse delivery.

They told me they will not refund until the book "does not arrive" and that the books are scheduled to arrive on Jan 8th. How absurd, to take 15 days to ship from Detroit/Troy Michigan to Chicago area (23 days from placing the order). Complaining about this situation to my friends, they told me that they would never buy the books, because many of the businesses listed have gone out of business, no longer there, or companies will no longer accept the Entertainment books.

Dont buy their books! they are in cahoots with retailers

the restaurant confirm they take the coupon, then when the bill is due says that you have the wrong card! then we whip out the iphone and try to use the mobile coupon, they tell you that they don't take those either. nice scam. bring the customers in, then maximize profits by denying the coupon. 1 out 5 coupon has worked. entertainment says they are not responsible. if they gave a crap about the customer, they would give full refund after 5 places denied you. call it working for them to weed out non compliant places.

I've had to throw away about 20 coupons because they were for places that went out of business. The Entertainment Book is pathetic, 90% of the coupons are for places that are struggling and going under, it's like their last chance of staying in business, hoping that somehow their dining rooms will magically fill up. Where the hell are the good coupons like TGIFridays, Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, places like that. Nope, Entertainment book people give us two pages of Bennigans, which is worthless since Bennigans went out of bussiness. Thanks for wasting my time and money Entertainment Book people.

entertainment book russian roulette - that's waht i call it. from 1996 to 2003, i have bought the entertainment book. in 2001, i noticed a disturbing trend - some merchants in the book refused to take the coupon and then blamed the entertainment book company for "printing these coupons without their authorization". mcdonalds, burger king, now out of business bennigans, and many others. i set out on a quest to find out the truth - called the corporate hq of these aforementioned companies, and called entertainment book hq as well. they all pointed the finger at each other. (If there were any truth to these claims, i suspect the entertainment book co would have been sued by these large corporations. to date, no such lawsuits have been filed. regardless, a customer should not have to go through this. i stopped buying the entertainment books, AND I stopped going to these merchants who refused to take the coupons. i am happy to say - bennigans is out of business. no such luck for the mcdonalds by my house, though I did find a mcdonalds who took the coupons in ft lauderdale, so now i only buy from that mcdonalds. rewarded for taking the coupons.
