BEWARE!!!! DESPEGAR IS A SCAM! DO NOT USE!

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME - NEVER USE DESPEGAR!!!

I learned my lesson the hard way. They charged me ahead of time roughly $400 for a hotel in Iguazu Falls, but when we showed up to the hotel they said we did not have a reservation. We had to find another hotel and it ruined our travel itinerary for that day.

We called and emailed Despegar but they never credited my money back. Now I see they are a SCAM and DO THIS ON PURPOSE TO MANY PEOPLE.

Never again.

    TRAVELERS BEWARE Worse Travel Agency EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    We booked a total of 6 tickets, (4 adults and 2 children), they emailed me stating I would receive a confirmation within 72 hours and I never did. I called them and they said my credit card declined the transaction which is a lie because I called the bank and there was no record of any attempt of charging the card. They then said the airfare went up by almost $2000 total. They are deceiving, liars and thieve because I went to the website right after and they still have the same fare and would probably do the same thing and try to to charge more

    SON UNOS ESTAFADORES

    La empresa Despegar.com se rehusa a reembolsarme un pasaje comprado en Diciembre de 2010. A pesar de haber recibido confirmacion via email de que el pasaje es efectivamente reembolsable y de haber enviado todos los documentos requeridos para iniciar el reembolso (asi como tambien numerosos emails de seguimiento), han pasado 6 meses y el reembolso todavia no se ha realizado. Dado que todos los tickets con status “open” vencen y se tornan invalidos si no son utilizados dentro de un anio desde la fecha original de partida, debo asumir que Despegar esta intentando retardar el proceso lo suficiente como para que mi ticket pierda validez - una clara estafa.

    Dado que los canales de comunicacion normales no parecen fucnionar con Despegar.com, he decidido hacer la situacion publica para que, al menos, el resto de los usuarios sepa con que nivel de irresponsabilidad se maneja esta empresa.

    Avoid despegar.com. Buy elsewhere

    The fare mentioned upfront in their website is actually less tan half of what you will finally pay!!! Among the initially non disclosed charges they will make you is a "ticket issuance fee" of around 8%!!!! This is not done even by brick and mortar travel agencies. They are not honest at all!!! Look elsewhere to buy your air tickets.

    Price mentioned in despegar.com website: 270 dollars. Amount actually paid: 806 dollars. Tickets issuance fee: 62 dollars.

    Do not book with despegar.com

    I booked my tickets and realized they charged for my infant baby who is lap held 600 usd. The worst part is we called the airline and they never charge for infants. I have flown already 8 times with my baby and have never been charged anything. She doesn't occupy a seat. What's worse is they are not wanting to give me my money back and I have spent hours trying to reason with them. I am spending 2000 dollars to fly to San antonio which normally costs under 1000 dollars what about that policy. Do not ever use this company.

    Horrible!!!

    To make a long story short, I Purchased 3 tickets from them, Lan airline needed to make changes and despegar agreed to them even though I told them not to because they didn't work for me!... because of them messing up and approving the change without asking for other options I have to fly 24hrs with a 1 year old baby!!! Managers never called me back or replied my emails!!! People who work there are clueless!

    Wost Costumer Service

    Today was my first time booking on despegar.com and had the worst experience!

    I made the reservation on a wrong date. Instantly, I called despegar.com to fix it. They told me that the only thing they can do is cancel the reservation and charge me 100% of the rate, after that, I can make a new reservation. What kind of solution is that??? The reservation was made 3 minutes ago!!! I understand there are policies and rules, but what about costumer service?? After talking to 2 different people and a supervisor, I called the hotel and told them my problem. First, they didn't have the reservation because it was too soon. Second, they had an excellent costumer service. Last, they fix the problem at 100%. The hotel not only made the change on the dates, but also they told me there is not penalty because the reservation was made a few minutes ago.

    Despegar.com: you have to learn how to see the whole picture and how to see beyond "politics". Sometimes, a little good will and good attitude make the difference. First and last time!

    Despegar.com se denomina la agencia de viajes online mas grande de Latinoamerica, que gran mentira, no pueden rembolsar, no pueden hacer cambios, tan solo vende tiquetes, sin ningun tipo de servicio post venta.

    Cuando llamamos a servicio al cliente, las opciones fueronNINGUNA! Ojala hubiera leido estos comentarios antes, lo peor de todo es que yo creo que a Despegar ni le importa

    They don't have costumer service skills, are liars and have bad temper. YES LIARS!!! CHEATERS AND THEY DO SCAM BUSINESS!!!

    They MAKE ME PAID $ 184 IN "TAXES" IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY AND BOOKING WITH THEM THE NEXT 3 DAYS IN THE SAME ROOM AND SAME HOTEL THEY DIDN'T CHARGE TAXES.

    I was trying to get a flight from Caracas to Orlando from Despegar.com (codigo 2522275), after I made the payment, Despegar contacted my wife saying that the middle and last names were inverted and that the airline would not allow us to travel under those names. My wife believed in Despegar and canceled the ticket with a large penalty fee, assuming that there was no other option. What she found out later was that we had travelled several times out of Caracas with the names as per the original ticket. So we ended up with no flights had to canceled the trip and spend $640 dolars for nothing. During the conversations with Despegar, we had to call from different phones because they would not answer the calls from the lines we had called before. Totally unprofessional and non-customer orientated. Be careful! You could be the next one. DO NOT USE DESPEGAR.COM.

    Maria Garcia no puede usar su boleto porque el apellido es de soltera y su apellido en el pasaporte es de casada. Aqui en los EEUU el apeilldo se cambia cuando se casa una senorita. Requisitan que el nombre en el pasaporte sea igual como en el boleto cuando uno entra a los EEUU por avion. Ya compramos otros boletos con el nombre correcto en Mexicana. Despegar.com no te va dar un credito o regresarte el dinero.

    I booked a hotel with despegar in the USA and canceled my booking the next day. Despegar refunded my money within a week. I had read many reviews about this being a problem and I wanted to let people know that in this instance that was not the case.

    Despegar. com son unos estafadores

    Reservé a través de despegar.com y me fue cobrado lo correspondiente al hotel. Al llegar al mismo, me confirmaron que nmi reserva no exitía y ahora tengo tres semanas tratando de que me devuelvan el dinero y lo único que responden es que están analizando mi caso. Son unos estafadores, en mala hora hice mis reservas por alli!

    Despegar.com does not refund your money.

    I booked a hotel and I cancelled it in the 72 hour time frame. They acknowledged the cancellation, but refuse to give a refund. Even the hotel questioned this company. Their customer service is rude. They are a terrible and dishonest company. Do not use them.

    SCAM...AVOID THIS SITE..False advertising and Fraudulent charges

    They advertised a Las Vegas hotel room available for the selected dates, after giving VISA info and confirming reservation, a message appears stating that the room and fare is no longer available and offer an upgrade at an elevated cost or the option to cancel the transaction. The transaction was cancelled and another message appeared stating that no charge was made to VISA and the transaction was cancelled. However the charges appeared next day on my VISA account and since no confirmation code was given since the transaction was cancelled, customer service cannot trace the charge.

    THEY ADVERTISE ROOMS THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE AVAILABLE AND MAKE FRAUDULENT CHARGES FOR NON EXISTENT TRANSACTIONS!!!! After 5 days still waiting for customer service to reply....

    Worst agency ever, buy elsewhere

    Poor costumer service, well more like non existing, never answered calls, after several attempts they finally took the call but kept me on hold forever while I stood out of a hotel in this Island in Mexico, waited on them to solve a problem regarding my reservation, paid for, but the hotel was unaware of it!! Horrible waste of time and money in my vacation, ended up paying extra, booking on my own whatever was available, while them ever called back only emailed to say, there is nothing we can do, sorry for the inconvenience,

    A COMPLETE SCAM

    I bought a partially refundable ticket from them in December 2010 and have been trying to get it refunded for the past 6+ months. Even though I have a written statement from the company saying that my ticket is refundable, they keep stalling. I am led to believe that they are trying to push the process long enough so that my ticket will expire and they won't have to refund anything. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM, it will be a nightmare if anything goes wrong. I would give them 0 stars if I could.

    I booked a hotel from South America on Despegar.com and received a receipt (they charged my credit card). Upon arriving in the United States I called to confirm my reservation and they had no record of my reservation. The reference code they sent me was no good. What's worse is that all the telephone numbers are 1) disconnected and or not in service or 2) have a recorded message which hangs up when complete. YOU CANNOT SPEAK TO A LIVE PERSON. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM!!!!!!!!

    i made a reservation for a hotel ,they never send me the receipt when i asked them a week later to send it to me ,then i noticed the dates where wrong stil 6 days before reservation i asked them to change the date and they wanted to charge me an other day for a change of date ,and they did not want to attent my complain

    I am a student at UCLA, and I had to travel to Mexico to study abroad. I payed $150 dolars for a ticket from Tijuana B.C. to Mexico city, but Despegar.com over charged me with $250 dolars, they never explained me why and I was never able to contact the supervisor or person incharge of their call canter. DO NOT EVER BUY ANY TICKETS AT DESPEGAR.COM

    Please, please Do Not buy any airplane tickets at Despegar.com. The never tell the true. I payed $400 dolars for two airplane tickets and I had to cancel the trip, then they told me that the tickets were good for one yr. and now that I want to use these tickets again, they want to charge me double then what I pay. Another $400 dolars just for the change! when I cancelled I asked the operator and she never mention anything. That is a crime.

    Non existent customer service

    I had a problem with my purchase from despegar.com and I called the phone number on their website. That phone number is basically just decoration on their page. All options tell me to go to their website. Their website has no way to email customer service for help. Do not risk buying anything from Despegar.com. If any issues arise you are basically screwed!

    Very polite but EXTREMELY INEFFECTIVE customer service

    Despegar.com is ok if you are absolutely sure you will not need to change your reservation. Been there, done that once or twice, fine...

    But BEWARE if you ever find out you need to talk to someone there for a flight change...

    Issues I faced when trying to change a flight segment in my return trip advancing the first return flight, so as to add a lay over of a few days in a city I would normally just fly through... Sounds simple, right?

    1. The phone number to call for Canadian customers was wrong in their website.

    2. The number to call if you're abroad in the middle of your trip connected me with people that were totally helpless as they said they couldn't see my reservation in their system since it had been purchased in Canada. They pointed me to the phone number in #1 which was wrong.

    3. I tried calling this second number another time and managed to choose English as the language, then I was able to talk to someone who promised they'd look at my flight change request and would get back to me within 48 hours... Well, they never called back... So I had to call back and today, at the same number I got a different menu, Spanish only, same helpless people as the first time. I called again to try and get a different person and they gave me a different phone number to call: 1-877-893-3988.

    4. I called this number and got help and a promise of a callback within an hour after they checked with "the other department" about my flight change request.

    5. To make a long story short, they don't allow you to speak directly with their travel agents like other companies do (ex. Expedia or travelocity). Despegar.com service reps act as the middle men getting messages back and forth to the travel agents.... It's such a waste of time to the customer.... They promiss to call you back with a resolution and they don't. If you decide to stay on the phone, they will put you on hold multiple times in the process. At the end they put on me the burden to call directly the airline to confirm that one of the segments could be cancelled without cancelling the whole trip (that was my plan B as the fare for the added lay over was over 1000 USD)... Come on.... What's the point of their existence if not to just make some bucks as an intermediary between the airlines and the customers (with minimal service)? I was extremely disappointed. Next time I'll work directly with the airline or with some reputable travel company.

    We booked a hotel in Palm Springs. When we arrived the receptionist told us they were fully booked. The phone number we were given to call at Despegar was 555-555-5555. Our credit card was billed anyway. What a scam.

    Despegar is a scam

    They stole my money. My wife and I made a reservation to stay at a dive resort in the Philippines. When we got there, there was no reservation and the resort hadn't been paid a cent and never even heard of Despegar. That entire week, I tried contacting Despegar to straighten the matter out, but to no avail. I ended up paying the resort again, this time directly, for a room that just by luck was available. Now I'm fighting with Despegar trying to get the money back through my credit card company. Disparage is lying and claiming we were a "no show". Unbelievable! They should be blocked from all reputable travel sites.

    Terrible company

    We've asked them time and time again to remove their name from our hotel on Tripadvisor and we get the run around over and over. They won't give a phone number to call for help,just an email address that no one answers. Bad customer service.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT WORK !!

    customer service does not work. I need to change my ticket because of an emergency I have been trying to call for a while. I never get hold of anyone! I tried all the options, but nothing. they really suck I do not think I'm going to use it ever again.hate the service.

    I booked a trip from Chicago to Buenos Aires round trip through DESPEGAR.COM because of the low price. Worse decision I ever made. They cancelled my flight from Miami to Buenos Aires and back as soon as they charged my credit card. LAN didn't know anything about it, DESPEGAR didn't know anything about it. They keep blaming one to each other. I ended up cancelling that trip, loosing $1,400 and buying new airfares through American Airlines. I could go First Class with that money. They are rude, arrogant and ignorant. Avoid this company.

    BE AWARE. I WILL NEVER - (NUNCA) - USE DESPEGAR....AGAIN

    I bought a ticket in July, flight was for December, airline canceled, THEY NEVER NOTIFIED, i called them to make changes, they said flight was not confirmed, Supposedly airline is going to reimburse me directly, but they have a 6 month allowance to do it. So I paid in July 2012, and will receive my money back until April or May 2013. I spent more than 3.5 hours in the phone trying to solve this. Lack of genuine customer service. I will use American Express travel services from now on.

    La peor experiencia

    UNOs ladrones de Los viajes, me dio un tiquete despues de pagar en una aerolinea que no queria. Llama UNO al Servicio al cliente y la tipica Frase de es os timadores, "no se puede hacer nada ya fue emitido" CUIDADO no signan usando despegar. Hacen con el cliente lo que quieren confunden Internet con compels a una maquina, atras hay seres humanos.

    despegar.con en miami!! no fue fraude conmigo!!

    les cuento q estuvimos buscando un paquete para ir a punta cana desde miami,encontramos uno muy bueno en despegar.com posupuesto no perdi tiempo e hise mis reservaciones!! les cuento q aqui en miami parece q el trato al cliente es muyy diferente al de otros paises por lo visto!! a mi me trataro super bien!! siempre me contestaban mis preguntas!!! y mi reserva de mi resort y el vuelo fueron confirmadas hoy! como lei todos los cmoentarios anteriores me asuste bastante y casi me daba un paro cardiaco!!pero pense por un momento q estoy en estados unidos y si pagas con tarjetade credito y te hacen fraude es obvio q el banco jamaas te desfraudara y lo levaran a legal tu caso!! pero mi caso afortunadamente no fue ese!! todos muy respetuoso conmigo!! inmediatamente recibi mis confirmaciones llame de inmediato al resort en punta cana para q me garantizaran ellos de mi estadia y ahii estaba mi nombre y llame a la linea area y tambien tenia mi reserva hecha!!y tuve muy buena experiencia y estoy preparada para mis vacaciones!! quiero aclarar q si tuve q esperar a q me reservaran mi paquete unos 4 dias!! fue lo unico negativo q pase con ellos! espero q esto les ayude a los futuros viajeros!!

    Mi padre Alberto Gonzalez, pago un boleto con depegar.com y le cancelaron el vuelo sin notificacion. Aparte le cobraron recargos por el cambio por otro vuelo. Que incompetentes,desconsiderados y rateros.

    No compre con Despegar.com!!!

    They don' refund without penalthy as I cancelled less than 24 hr

    I bought a ticket from Melbourne  to Santiago from despagar website in Chile in less than 24 hours. I realized I made a mistake in calculating the price as the symbol for Pesos currency is the same as dollars ($). When I paid and checked my bank account realized the mistake. We rang the customer service number and explained. The representative advised we have 24hours to make up my mind and cancel without penalty hence my mistake. The refund will be processed from 30 to 120days.

    We just made a phone call now to finally cancel and it's still within 24 hours but another guy is advising that it's not possible to get a full refund and they may refund me around 100AUD. (still 10 days remaining to the flight).

    The advisor said he will put a request and will get back to us within 24 hours what can be done.

    This is horrible customer service by this website that representatives do advise the conditions differently.

    I would give zero minus star if I could. I'm following this up with my auntie who is an inspector.

    I NEED MY FULL REFUND WITH NO PENALTY.

    FRAUD

    Despegar is a COMPLETE FRAUD. NEVER BUY THROUGH THEM. I purchased a reservation to a hotel in Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. Upon arriving at the hotel, they said the room was never booked and I was not listed. However, Despegar already charged my card despite never booking a room. I wouldn't recommend this company to ANYONE. THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY.
