Ancestry has taken much of our own research which we shared freely and added it to their own data base loosing much of the providers information in the process which I think is a shame. The other information they have provided is fantastic and really works well with Family Tree Maker to a degree. Their search engine does not, in my opinion, work very well. as it finds all kinds of unrelated info and does not search much into it's own book collections, which I think would be a great help. I know it can be done as other for fee sites do it.

The biggest draw back for me now is the cost of their service. I was a member for over 15 years and saw the cost go from 59 dollars to over 300 which is quite a jump for much of the same info I have already obtained in the past. The only reason I would need to use it is if some new data or a better search engine would come up with new info and notify me on FTM. Unfortunately any new data they say they have on my ancestors in my tree is old news and not from new sources.

I miss their service but really can't afford their prices.

Only 3 stars because of price. I was a subscriber to Ancestry.com for several years and enjoyed it; however, it became too expensive for me, so I dropped my subscription. Ancestry.com may be available through your library system--it is here. If Ancestry.com cut their rates in half, I think they would make up the difference in the number of people who would keep a subscription. Especially in this economy! If they did cut their rates to half--I would rank them at 5 stars for price and content.

I really do love Ancestry.com but I agree with many of the other reviews that the cost is too much - especially considering much of their content is transcribed by volunteers. I transcribed over a thousand records for them & was told that I would only receive a 15% or 20% discount if I renewed my subscription. Didn't like that they are making all this money off the volunteers & wouldn't even offer them a free membership. Needless to say I no longer transcribe for them. If it weren't for the prices/lack of discounts/promotions, I would give them 5 stars.

The trees that have not been verified are taken as gospel by the inexperienced researcher and they in turn, build additional trees that may or may not be correct. It's a fun site, but it's not the best source for genealogy. The cost of Ancestry.com is ridiculous considering that there are many sources out there that can be accessed for free and are more concerned with accuracy. They may take a bit of research to find, but then those who are searching for ancestors should be willing to do it right rather than quick, easy and possibly all wrong. Ancestry.com is in the business of making money. I can't fault them for that, but they really have no obvious loyalty to what genealogy really means.

I love the site but I too no longer can afford it. They would make more money form more people if they would lower there prices.I am on a fixed income. Now I finely have the time to use it I don't have the money to get it. I have used it for years and its wonderful and there is so much info.

I subscribed to ancestry.com several years ago when they were still offering free subscriptions to local Family History Centers. I wanted to have access to their site in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. I pre-paid for a one-year subscription and expected the service to end after that period. I was shocked when deductions continued to be made from my bank account. Customer Service informed me that it is necessary to cancel at the end of the year. I was not happy at all with that tactic.

I was, on the other hand, very happy with the census information that was made available to me at that time. When I up-graded my subscription for a while I realized that I was paying a great deal of money for a service that offered me no pertinent information for my needs.

I've seen what the site now offers and, because it is no longer available at the Family History Centers, would once again like to subscribe. Because of my former experience, I hesitate to make that move. I think it is a wonderful way to glean information, but quite over-priced.

They seem to have access to many translated data bases and unique data sources alongside with a large membership.

But, they are a bit expensive.

Didn't yet try the paid service so cannot tell whether it is worth the price.

I have found Ancestry.com extreemly useful and very cooperative.

When I have found something of record, it feels like eating peanuts -- you just can't stop.

I just finished presenting the information that I have found -- facts and not just hearsay passed down through the family, at the celebration of our Paley Family having first arrived in the USA in 1908

They need some software updates to make the website easier, and usable. They also need to make merging trees possible online. There are several ways to improve the experience. However, the incredible information blows a person out of the water! The database is amazing.

I think some people are confused about Ancestry.com. First of all, it doesn't cost very much when you consider how much you'd have to pay to travel and find these physical records. You are also paying for the convenience of having the world's largest online genealogical collection in one place, rather than scattered across the internet and physical locations across the world.

Also, I think Jodi is talking about the World Archives Project where you can volunteer to index records. Their website says that any of the indexes that volunteers do are free to the public. The records you're paying for are done by paid Ancestry.com employees. I can only imagine the time and money they put into compiling such a large database of records.

I wish Ancestry.com was more affordable.

I also wish they would offer an annual rate that could be paid monthly, instead of expecting one lump payment.

Also they should offer returning customers cheaper rates for being loyal.

I found just excellent information at Ancestry.com,especially when I added on the world service but.... their service is very expensive. Sign up for a month when you know you have a lot of time, then QUIT before the next billed month begins. Come back 6 months later with all you questions lined up, answer them for a month and QUIT. This way you tag into their updated information but don't pay for the downtime.I think $15 a month makes sense , not $25 or $35 as it is now. At least they have added the 6 month membership instead of a year to get the discount for long-term research.

Loved Ancestry but can't pay the price anymore. Why don't you divide the info. into sections and charge separately for each section.? Such as the 13 colonies and a section for the western states or Northern States? I resent the fact that the site is like cable TV-- Pay for it all or you can't have any . I don't like paying for information that I can not use. I think its a great site but too expensive.

I used Ancestry.com for one search and then cancelled...feeling I would be charged for one month. I had no idea that I should receive an e-mail confiriming the cancellation...Being a senior, I lately do not read my brokerage statements ...(Which is where the credit card I used would have shown up). End of the year, I finally did and found that I had been charged 19.95 for 11 months. They would not refund any except this last month. Unhappy.

I have been using ancestry.com for several years, I have found family members I never knew I had, we have made contact and see eachother all the time, without ancestry.com I would have never found them. I love my family so much I couldn't imagine my life without them in it. This has been the most amazing thing that has happen to me. I have always had a hole in my heart that was missing something, ancestry.com has filled it for me. Do this, it could happen to you.

I was a member of Ancestry.com for two years in 2004 & 2005. I loved it. My husband and I adopted our chidren in 2006 so expense is an issue.

While I cannot afford it at this time, I do not think the price is unreasonable.

Look at the cost comparison to actually having to go onsite to research. There is the cost of travel, hotel, food, copying, etc...

For those that cannot travel there is the cost of copying, postage and often paying someone else to do the research for you.
