For those of you who travel in and out of the Austin airport (Austin-Bergstrom International Airport) you will be happy to hear that starting today, 5-23-2011, you can get 30 minutes of free wi-fi wireless internet access on your laptop/phone. The service is provided by the current broadband wireless company for the airport in Boingo Wireless. Note that the half hour of free internet is for a single, continuous session. So if you disconnect after 5 minutes and try to connect again you won't be eligible for more free internet minutes, at least for another 24 hours.

If you want longer free internet at the Austin airport, there are several computer stations located at the lower level baggage claim areas of the airport.

Now Sponsored Internet

Just got back from a flight at the airport, and wanted to report that they do indeed have free wi-fi. BUT- it is slow and you have to watch a promotional video (by Boingo). Alas, it is better than no access. I did try doing SSH and remote desktop, and they would not work. It was apparent that they blocked access via firewall to most ports, so don't expect to do any major work. Teamviewer did work, however.

Eventually I wish ABA's wireless access would become more like the Ft. Lauderdale airport. They have free wi-fi, period, with no problem with SSH, RDP, etc.

Also wanted to mention that I was able to watch streaming live TV for free via DISH on Southwest. It worked pretty well. Wi-fi internet access cost $8 for the flight, however.

Don't see it anymore in 2014

Was at the Bergstrom airport the other day, but no more freebie Internet, even the short half hour session. I used the 4G on my phone instead, and connected(using Easy Tether) it to my lappy via USB to give it access. But hopefully the airport brings back the complimentary access which would be more befitting of its high ranking.

Free Internet

As a frequent traveler using the Austin Bergstrom airport this is very welcome news. I've used Boingo many times and they've been a pretty easy company to deal with. Half an hour is just enough time to check the email, browse the web a bit right before boarding.
