Outlook Express Safety Tips

Tips: Windows-world
First of all, make sure your Outlook Express security settings are correctly set to the recommended safe options. Click on Tools, Options, Security, and make sure "Restricted sites zone", "Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me", and "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" are selected.

Secondly make sure you don't have the Preview Pane enabled. The preview pane basically opens the message when you single-click on it and you do NOT want that. To disable it, go to View, Layout, and uncheck "Show preview pane".

Thirdly- if you suspect a message is spam or a virus there's a trick that allows you to see what's in the message by not opening it. Opening it means double-clicking on the message and have its content pop up to you in a window. Instead of doing that, right-click on the message, go to properties, click on the details tab, and then click on the Message Source... button. This way you can see the message contents without having malicious HTML/Javascript or tracking code be executed.
